Red Hill is a beautiful area set in the Mornington Peninsula's hinterland. It is characterised by large gum trees, quiet lanes and gentle rolling hills. Tucked away amid the trees and hills is an abundance of vineyards, restaurants, orchards and galleries.
Red Hill and Red Hill South are primarily agricultural areas benefiting from the rich, red clay that gave the villages their names. Settlement of the area began in the mid-1850s and the names of old families are remembered in street names including: McIlroy, Shand, Tuck, Sheehan, Stanley, Bayne, Callanan, Eaton, Prossor, Higgins, Arkwell and Perry. Large estates have been subdivided over time and a number of hobby farms have sprung up, many owned by city dwellers looking for a tree-change. Although a popular destination for tourists during the busy holiday seasons, the area has a total permanent population of approximately 2,000 people who enjoy the rural lifestyle and beautiful scenery of the Mornington Peninsula's hinterland.
